"I've never been a big fan of embroidered fabrics — many sins have been committed in their name — but this one changed my mind. It has a particular elegance, and the luminous flowers add a note of glamour. They're in various pleasing shades of taupe, so it's not a screaming floral. The billowy quality of the linen background makes it great for curtains

"A dressy taffeta like this would be stunning on a bergère or fauteuil. I'm nuts for them, I use them in every room in every house. They're like jewelry."

"My favorite silk stripe ever. It adds richness to a room. I'd do two squishy down-filled sofa pillows with an extravagant fringe — this is your frothy moment."

I LOVE how this stripe pulls in all the colors from the floral. Joe really knew how to compliment the floral. This is how I design......great job Joe.

"I'm sitting on this right now in my living room! It has a quiet elegance, and it's great on a pair of slipper chairs pulled up to a coffee table, Billy Haines style."

"It's got a watermarked strié, almost like a subtle moiré, that sort of shimmers. Dress up a club chair with it. The bonus is that it's hardy and easy to maintain."

"To offset the shininess of BABYLONE curtains, upholster walls in this coarse-weave linen. The flat finish brings the dressiness down."

From the eyes of a designer, this is a good example of how it is done from our minds eye to reality!!!

Tassel History

Tassels have been used to symbolize rank, status, and luxury for centuries. Both military officials and religious sects have used these flowing embellishments, whether attached to clothing, uniforms, or other important objects associated with rank and status. Tassels have also served practical purposes over the years, such as distinguishing a key and helping keep small items from becoming lost. Even today, tassels are used for status, the most prominent example of which is the graduation tassel attached to a mortar board.
In sixteenth century France, a formal guild for passementerie was formed; a group of artisans specializing in tassels and trimmings as artwork. These elaborate embellishments may have taken weeks or months to create from the finest materials.
Today, more elaborate tassels are sought-after as design elements. Yet whether you choose a simple, fun design or an elegant, artistic piece, using tassels as embellishments has a rich history and a myriad of possible applications.

Suzanne is pleased to announce that after the Print source show - a few of her prints were selected as TRENDS to watch for Fall 10-11 by a major UK trend forecasting firm.

I love Suzanne's style of displaying her fabrics, as well as her creativity creating them, I look forward to more articles about her future new lines.

Pattern Mix

“It’s a contemporary home with strong Moorish influences,” project architect Matthew Stratton, of Bender & Associates Architects, says of a Key West, Florida, house he designed for model, actress and writer Veronica Webb and her husband, George Robb. “It’s like looking into a kaleidoscope,” Webb observes of the rooms. “You have enough pattern and color to keep you entertained: Veronica feels that it all weaves together all of her husband George’s shipwreck culture with her fashion and crafts culture. The dome ceiling was produced in Morocco. Shade trim, Samuel & Sons. (March 2009)

A 19th-century Italian Neoclassical parcel-gilt bed dominates the guest room, which serves as “a retreat from the brightness of the rest of the apartment,” says designer Michael Smith of a Manhattan pied-à-terre in The Carlyle. “It intensifies the colors of the other rooms and has an old-European feeling.” Wallcovering from Brunschwig & Fils. Designer Alexa Hampton transformed this library of a New York apartment with a “nice muddy Edwardian green”, accented with reds. (February 2000).

Mixing patterns, as you can see, works if you stay in the same color tones, adding a pop accent color is the fun!!!

Draperies

When looking at modern houses lately, you may not notice that curtains or draperies are no longer a point of interest. Their place was taken by the contemporary blinds, which are a lot easier to take care of and manage. If fabric is used it is for accent/color/ or privacy only with smaller amounts of material. However, you have to agree draperies give a special feel to certain rooms and in those homes they do exist, they bring wonders in matters of overall interior design. I love blending window treatments with coordinated fabrics for pillows and other accessories, which completely changes the feel, for that total custom look of elegance.

Color Palettes

Selecting a color palette can be confusing, these samples show if you stay within the same color tones you can add interest by mixing and matching fabrics designs, color and scale.. Furnishings with simple lines invite fabrics that are more complex in color or texture. Most people use two fabrics when decorating a room -- a print and a solid. Add interest and variety by using three or more fabrics in a room with a pleasing mix of color, pattern, scale and texture. First, begin by choosing your focal or main fabric. Be sure it is a pattern that you LOVE!!!!!, it is the main pattern which guides you to choose the coordinating fabrics. Choose a pattern with a minimum of three colors. Choose two more fabrics, each having one or two of the focal fabric colors in their pattern. Vary the three fabrics in contrast. One fabric should be light, one medium and one dark. Change the scale or size of the patterns by choosing one fabric with a large pattern, one medium and one small. Solids fall into the small-pattern category. Using all the same size patterns will cause each one to overpower the other. Of course, fabric decisions will depend upon your room’s ‘design styles’. This means that a particular style will require a specific material pattern.
Be sure to bring home a sample and view it in your home lighting, colors appear different in sunlight or showroom lighting .

Today, fabric companies are offering coordinated fabric sets; which mean choosing matching fabrics is easier and the decision is less confusing.
